Interview with Pocahontas Music

R&B artist, Pocahontas Music!

Your stage name, Pocahontas, is iconic. How does it shape your artistic identity and what message do you hope to convey through it, especially in today's world? My real name is Pocahontas Music, it’s not just a stage name. My message is one of self-love, authenticity, and staying true to who you are. As a proud Native American and Dominican artist, my identity, beliefs, and culture are essential to my artistry and the stories I share through my music.

What influenced you to want to get into music? I’ve been singing since a young age and developed a natural ability to adapt to various genres effortlessly. My greatest influence has always been my pure love for music.

Can you share a personal experience that has profoundly impacted your songwriting and your approach to vulnerability in your music? My life itself is a personal journey, one shaped by challenges, trauma, and illness. I’ve transformed every hardship and negative experience into something meaningful and beautiful. These experiences not only inspire my music but also make it easier for me to write authentically and turn my story into song.

The R&B scene is constantly evolving. What do you see as the biggest challenges and opportunities for emerging artists in the genre right now? One of the biggest challenges in the music industry is that support often comes only after success is visible. Friends and family may not always back you during the grind, but once you start achieving success, they want to be part of the journey, even if they weren’t there before. Regardless of genre, there’s often a lack of support in the early stages. While people say strangers support you more, that’s not always the case. In today’s technology-driven world and the era of social media, it often feels like a popularity contest. With so many artists trying to stand out, those who receive more support tend to reach success faster.

How important is visual storytelling to you? How involved are you in the creative direction of your music videos and the overall aesthetic surrounding your brand?
For me, the message is everything. The power of words is real, and my passion lies in creating music that truly speaks to people. Knowing that my lyrics can impact someone’s life is the greatest measure of success. This belief drives my creative direction and shapes my journey as an artist.

Beyond singing and songwriting, what other creative outlets do you explore, and how do they inform your musical process? Beyond music, my creative outlets include ballet, painting, playing musical instruments, and writing books. As a multi-talented artist, these passions inspire new ideas and enhance my creativity. I incorporate all of my artistic abilities into my music, showcasing that I am more than just a singer and songwriter, I am a well-rounded creator.

What's your favorite song to perform live, and what makes that connection with the audience so special? I don’t know if I have a single favorite song of mine. I love all the music I create equally. Each song holds its own meaning and significance to me.

What are some causes or social issues that you are passionate about, and how do you hope to use your platform to raise awareness or inspire change? I value truth and honesty above all else. Everyone has experienced being misrepresented or lied about at some point, which is why I believe in keeping proof to protect my integrity. I am passionate about raising awareness and standing for justice because no one deserves to have their character or hard work undermined by falsehoods, rumors, or gossip. Ultimately, the truth always comes to light.

Can you give us any insights into upcoming projects, collaborations, or new directions you plan to explore musically? I am currently working on new music while actively promoting my latest releases. In addition, I am promoting my new book, Ghostwriting for Royalty, a valuable resource for music professionals looking to expand their careers. It is now available on Amazon. Beyond music, I am involved in modeling projects and photo shoots, as well as working on an exciting new film project that I can’t wait to share with the world.

What advice would you give to young aspiring R&B artists who are just starting their journey? Be thankful and grateful to be alive. Love your self and be proud of how far you came. Never give up no matter how hard it gets. Stay away from negativity and toxicity. Focus on those who do support you with actions. Be authentic. Do not care about haters. Keep a positive mindset. Network and build real connections.
